Every Lunar cycle takes 29 days, 12 hours and 44.5 minutes to complete. The Muslim calendar, which is purely lunar, has 12 months which alternate between 29 and 30 days. As the Muslim year is 354 days, every new years falls 10 to 12 days earlier than the previous year,
when compared with the solar or Gregorian calendar.

According to the Chinese lunar calendar, however,
the New Year must begin on the second new moon after the
wintersolstice, that is, between 21 January and 19 February every year.
To ensure this, the Chinese very pragmatically add a 13th month to the calendar
now and again. These two very different two communities rarely celebrate their major festivals simultaneously.

Music has had a unique place in the spiritual life of the Chinese since the earlier times. Evidence of this found inscribed on prehistoric oracle bones. Since the ancient Chinese musical scale has become obsolete, much of the traditional music is played extemporaneously, supporting the belief that music is a live thing, re-created every time it is played.

Malay music originated from the pre-Islamic animist belief that the natural world was inhabited by spirits which had to be placated by ritualistic performances like the wayang kulit. Over the centuries, the Malay performing arts and music have evolved in tandem with the history of the region, with wide ranging influences from near and far.
